PrestoCon 2024 Recap: Celebrating Community and Showcasing Innovation

    PrestoCon 2024 wrapped up last week, and it was truly inspiring to see so many members of our vibrant community come together in person. There’s something special about connecting face-to-face, exchanging ideas, and sharing a collective passion for Presto. Events like this strengthen the bonds within our community and remind us why open source thrives on collaboration.

    First, I want to give a huge thank you to Meta for their incredible partnership in making PrestoCon possible. From hosting us at their beautiful Bay Area offices to providing the food and drinks, their support played a key role in creating such an awesome event for our community.

    Highlighting Incredible Sessions

    The sessions this year were nothing short of amazing, with many showcasing the incredible work happening in and around Presto. One of the standout moments was the panel discussion, The Power of Open Data Platforms with leaders from Meta, Denodo, and Bolt sharing how Presto has become a cornerstone of their data strategies and highlighting its role in enabling open, agile, and vendor-neutral data platforms. The conversation underscored how Presto’s flexibility and vibrant community are helping organizations solve modern data challenges and innovate at scale.

    In addition to the panel, keynotes and sessions featured inspiring technical deep dives and practical insights:

    • The TSC Keynote where Tim laid out the future of Presto (spoiler: All-C++ clusters, a pluggable ecosystem, and broadened use cases like OLAP and batch)
    • How Presto powers one of the largest lakehouses in the world at Meta, highlighting Meta’s interactive analytics business and batch processing for AI and analytics systems workloads
    • Uber’s Presto ecosystem, made up of 4 regions with 51 clusters, 16K hosts, and 650K cores 😱, and some of the cool tooling they’ve built to help scale/monitor/optimize their workloads

    End-User Stories That Inspire

    It was also incredible to hear from end users about how Presto is powering their data platforms. Bolt, Uber, Meta, Admiral Group, and Perkins Coie shared their experiences using Presto to solve real-world problems. These stories demonstrated the versatility and impact of Presto across industries, from e-commerce and transportation to legal and insurance.

    A Thriving Ecosystem

    The Presto ecosystem is growing stronger than ever, with innovative tools and platforms being built around and on top of Presto. From new connectors to integrations with cutting-edge technologies like Lance, Apache Hudi, and Apache Iceberg, it’s clear that Presto’s flexibility and power continue to drive innovation. Personally, I’m excited to see what more use cases surface around GenAI and Presto.

    The Buzz Around Presto C++

    Another highlight was the growing momentum around Presto C++. The sessions diving into its architecture and capabilities left many of us excited about what’s to come. The potential for higher performance and broader use cases makes this a thrilling area of development for the community.

    Looking Ahead

    PrestoCon 2024 reminded us of the incredible things we can achieve when we come together as a community. I’m especially grateful for Meta’s partnership and generosity in hosting this event—it truly exemplifies the spirit of collaboration that drives Presto forward.

    Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, and contributed to making this event such a success. Whether you’re building the next great feature, solving challenges with Presto at scale, or exploring new integrations, we’re all part of what makes this project so impactful.

    Special shout out to our rockstar community member Emmanuel Francis who captured so many moments at the show 🥹
